corporal "punishment"

Here's a window into how "accepted" corporal punishment is in Grenadian culture: I have learned that, at times, locals call the police to come and beat their children (when they feel their own beatings are not "working"), and believe it or not, many police oblige these requests.  This is where I live and work. This is a glimpse into what I, & some of those from the community whom I treat, are up against. Beating anyone leaves lifelong emotional scars. Among other things, it will guarantee fractured self-esteem. It is never acceptable for an adult to ever lay a violent hand against a child. It is abuse. Period. And you don't even want to know how dismissive and half arsed the police response often is to reports of spousal abuse, rape or sexual assault. Lots of devastated lives here.

  2. Wow. How surreal for you to be counseling people under those circumstances and then turn around and counsel well-to-do foreign med students. Your brain must be reeling.
