Dengue

I just learned (via a woman from Trinidad whose husband has fallen badly ill with "the Fever") that there is a significant outbreak of dengue in Grenada right now that the government here is refusing to publicize...so as not to effect their approaching tourist season. She is a reliable source and informed me immediately this morning after reading about it all in a Trinidad newspaper (that warned of Barbados too, where unfortunately the same is occurring).  Please Please Please don't let me get dengue...or anything else! Am already terrified & fearing a tropical eye infection having woken with a painful swollen eyelid today, light sensitivity & inability to wear my contacts. Trying to dig deep into the positivity bin...scraping it in fact.  Silver lining: 1 month down, now only 11 to go.

  4. Its not in the water. Like malaria, it is spread by mosquitoes (aedes aegypti mosquitoes to be exact, and these mosquitoes are mostly day-biters) and it can be prevented in most of the same ways (wear long sleeves and pants most of the time, sleep under an insecticide treated net, clear water. Unlike malaria, which is a parasite, dengue is caused by a virus, and there are no specific treatments, just some pain medicine for your joints, and drinking lots of fluids.

You'll be fine Julie.. don't be too worried
